Discover How the Process of UCG Can Save You Money

Anyone who wants to save money on gas should be interested in the process of underground coal gasification, or UCG. It is an alternative way of obtaining clean fuels, one that has been explored more recently due to increasing oil prices. Considering that the process benefits everyone, it is surprising how few individuals have any idea what it is. Not only do its advantages affect everyone, but the ideas and technology behind UCG are also fascinating. For this reason, it is important to at least have an idea of what goes on underground during the coal gasification process.

Despite the lack of knowledge about UCG, the idea has been around since the late 19th century. The process takes advantage of the coal reserves deep in the earth’s surface, which is helpful since about 85 percent of the world’s coal cannot be mined using typical surface mining methods. The UCG procedure involves drilling two wells just above where the coal is located, called the coal seam. The first well is injected with air and water, which are referred to as oxidants. That same well is also used to ignite the coal beneath the surface. Once the temperature is high enough to mix with the coal and create synthetic gas, the second well is used to release the coal above the surface.

The benefits of this procedure are many, but the advantages most people are currently interested in involve money. Though members of the public might not pay for the process directly, they most certainly pay indirectly, once the alternative gas appears at the pump. If UCG becomes universally accepted, the savings of this procedure will eventually trickle down to the consumer, allowing everyone to spend more money on other items they want or need, rather than gasoline. For this reason, it is up to consumers to rally to change the way gasoline is obtained, and they can start by spreading the word about the financial benefits of UCG.

The cost of the UCG process is far less than that of typical mining procedures. First of all, the equipment itself is cheaper, as not as many tools are needed. Transportation costs are also decreased, as current products resulting from traditional mining need to be moved to their destination by train. This means train tracks need to be built and maintained, and several trains need to operate constantly to get the products where they need to go. Gas is much easier to transport, as it can simply be piped to its destination. Those are just a few of the obvious financial benefits of UCG.

There are other costs associated with current practices that many people don’t even think of, which UCG could eliminate. For example, the fact that the coal does not need to be dug up means that there are fewer labor costs involved with UCG. This also translates to no cleanup costs. Additionally, we have access to much more coal than ever before, as this process allows us to reach underground reserves, which would be far too expensive to dig up and revert to energy. This ability ensures that there will be no shortage of coal in the foreseeable future, which could keep gas prices low. Keeping the coal underground is clearly not just a good move for the environment, but for our wallets, too.

Lowering the price of energy for our cars should be of utmost importance. Most people have probably already realized that the phrase “you get what you pay for” is not always true, and this is one of those situations. As long as the gas you get keeps your car running, is a low price, and is easy to obtain, you probably don’t lose sleep wondering how good your gasoline is. The product attained through UCG is just as good as the current gas, but better for our planet and much cheaper. Implementing UCG as the main source of energy for our cars is the first step to helping everyone get back on their feet when it comes to finances.
